Hubert Nielsen, 88, of Hughson, passed away at Emanuel Medical Center on June 1. He was born in Alameda, Calif. to Jens and Sofie Nielsen in 1921. Hubert was raised in Yucaipa, Calif., and at an early age asked Jesus Christ into his life. After high school, he attended U.C. Berkeley until WWII. Hubert served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was involved in the D-Day landing. During WWII, he served in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. After the war, Hubert finished college at U.C. Berkeley and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. He lived in the East Bay most of his life. After he retired in 1984, he moved to Turlock and relocated to Hughson in 2001. Hubert was a member of the Lakeside Baptist Church in Oakland, Calvary Baptist in Alameda, Calvary Baptist in Turlock, Monte Vista Chapel, Samaritan Village Chapel (which he helped found), The Gideons International, AWWA, Cal Alumni Association and the Christian Service Brigade. Hubert enjoyed studying his Bible, praying, golfing, snow skiing, doing crossword puzzles, backpacking, woodworking and playing multiple brass instruments. He was an avid Cal Bears football fan. Most of all, Jesus Christ and family were his life.
Hubert is survived by his wife,  Floydine “Ping” Nielsen of Hughson; children, Greg (Julie) Nielsen of San Lorenzo, Calif., Brian (Nicole) Nielsen of Las Vegas, Nev., Larry (Jean) Wenell of Lockeford, Calif., Linda (Gordon) Horn of Turlock, Sandy (Terry) Thornton of San Diego, Calif., Larry (Joan) Johnson of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Sharryl (LeRoy) Lindberg-Friesen of South Bend, Ind.;12 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Hubert was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Lillie (Swanson) Nielsen; three brothers; and one sister.
Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 5 Allen Mortuary. A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 5 at Monte Vista Chapel. Burial will be at Turlock Memorial Park.
