Martinez
Imogene Frances Martinez, 82, passed away peacefully at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House. She was born in Los Angeles to Elsie Belle Mallory. She lived her childhood in the Imperial Valley.
In 1951 she went to work for Pacific Telephone Company as a telephone operator. She educated herself to later become one of their first female engineers. She helped to design what is now the AT&T Universal Plan over 30 years ago.
In 1958, she married Roy Vincent Martinez. He was a career sailor with the United States Navy. They shared a love story romance for 24 years before Marty passed away in 1982. Everyone always commented that he looked like Clark Gable. She would smartly reply that he was better looking and he was hers.
The Navy career took them to many locations across the U.S. including San Francisco, Yuma, Nev., Norfolk, Va. and Fallen, Nev.. After Marty's retirement in 1968, they settled in Ceres and built their home which Genie continued to live in for another 27 years after Marty's passing.
When not in her yard gardening she was attending any one of the many clubs that she belonged to, including the Telephone Pioneers Club. She still kept in touch with her fellow co-workers from Pacific Telephone and dined with them often.
She was a remarkable woman whose loyalty to her family and friends was unbounded. She held her head high with dignity and grace regardless of the situation. She was a friend to so many and treated them as if they were family.
Our family would like to thank the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson for providing a beautiful and serene setting for her. She and our family were treated with such compassion and care that there are no words to express our gratitude. We request that donations be made to them in her honor.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2 at Lakewood Funeral Home in the Heritage Chapel in Hughson.
