Joan Harris Hendrick passed away on November 30, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 30, 1940 in San Francisco and grew up in Marin County where she attended Larkspur-Corte Madera Elementary School and Sir Francis Drake High School, graduating in 1958. Joan went on to attend San Jose State studying art history. While at San Jose State she was an exchange student to Italy with the Experiment in International Living. This began her lifelong love of travel. After graduating from San Jose State she worked first in personnel for the Stanford Emporium and later was a social worker for Santa Clara County.

She married David Hendrick in 1967 at the Stanford Memorial Chapel and moved to Schweinfurt, Germany, where David was a battalion surgeon with the U.S. Army. Later they moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where her husband did his residency in Radiology. They settled in Turlock, California, where David had his radiology practice. She and David raised their children, Jeff, Michael, and Jodie in the Central Valley.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as a devoted volunteer. She was a board member of the United Cerebral Palsy of Stanislaus County and a founding member of the Family Service League of Stanislaus County.

During their time in Turlock, Joan and David came frequently to Carmel, and it became their favorite destination. Joan and David retired there in 1999. Joan continued her volunteer work with the Alliance on Aging. She was first a friendly visitor and later a peer support counselor.

Throughout their marriage Joan and her husband traveled widely, enjoying trips to Europe, the Caribbean, Fiji, New Zealand, Turkey, Canada and Hawaii.

Joan had many interests especially in the area of metaphysics. She studied yoga, Tai Chi, meditation, and Reiki. She had an open heart and loved her family and friends dearly.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, David, children Jeff, Michael (Lynn), and Jodie (Ken), three grandchildren Lauren (David), Ryan and Tyler, great granddaughter Ellie, her sister, Gail, of Petaluma, and niece Caron.

According to her wishes there will be no funeral service. Donations in her memory can be made to the Alliance on Aging or the Carmel Foundation.
