Joao Espinola Bettencourt, 86, of Hilmar was born Sept. 8, 1923 in Ribeirinha Guadalupe, Graciosa, Azores and passed away March 15, 2010 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
He was a custodian for 14 years and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Hilmar and Sociadade Filarmonica Union Popular of San Jose.
He is survived by wife, Maria S. Bettencourt of Hilmar; daughter, Terry Espinola and her husband, Manuel, of Hilmar; son, Isalino Bettencourt and his wife, Luzia, of San Jose; sister, Tina Sousa and Anibel Bettencourt of San Jose; grandchildren, Carlos Espinola and his wife, Candace, John Bettencourt and his wife, Theresa, and Michael Bettencourt his finance, Leighan; and great grandchildren, Tyler Bettencourt, Makaila Bettencourt, Sean Bettencourt, Kaitlyan Espinola and Landon Espinola.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Maria Bettencourt and Faustino Bettencourt; and brothers, Alberto Bettencourt, Albino Bettencourt and Arlindo Bettencourt.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 19 at Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Chapel in Turlock. A rosary/mass is scheduled for 1 p.m. March 20 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 20263 American Ave., Hilmar. It will be officiated by Father Hilary Silva. Burial will be at Turlock Memorial Park.
