John Donley, 87, of Modesto, passed away at his home two days before his 88th birthday. He was born in Othello, Wash. to John M. and Marie Donley. He grew up and graduated from high school in Othello, and then joined the U.S. Navy. John served in some of the main activities of World War II, including service at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. After returning to the U.S., he worked for over 40 years as a route salesman distributing food to retailers. His routes were first in the Spokane area and later in the Los Angeles and Bakersfield areas.
In October 1987, John married Mary Silva. They have been constant companions ever since that time. They moved back to Spokane for a while. Because of health concerns they relocated to Union City and finally settled in Modesto. Together they managed apartment buildings during his last few years. John was also a life member of the Masonic Lodge.
John is survived by his wife, Mary Donley of Modesto; brother, Richard Donley of Othello, Wash.; and extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 13 at the Masonic Lodge, 800 Rose Ave., Modesto.
