Services for Joy Skillingstad, 79, of Denair, will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 8 at Allen Mortuary with burial to follow at Denair Cemetery. She passed away on Aug. 5 at Memorial Hospital in Modesto.
Joy was born in Ft. Bidwell, Calif. to William and Ruth Henerson in 1930. The family moved to Malin, Ore. when Joy was 7. She married Marvin J. Skillingstad in 1950, and moved to Klamath Falls, where they had a Gospel radio program singing and playing the guitar, piano, and the accordion. She settled in Turlock in 1974, and worked as a nurse’s aid for Brandel Manor for 10 years. She then worked in food service for 30 years for the Turlock School District. She was an active member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Turlock.
Joy was a member of the League of Mercy, a group that volunteers at several
nursing homes helping residents with their shopping or just spending time with them. She was also a member of the Salvation Army. Joy was much loved and was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
She is survived by her children, Gene Skillingstad of Klamath Falls, Ore., Diane (Larry) Brewer of Dorris, Calif., Pat (Dean) Franklin of Turlock, Marian Austin of Dorris and Gena (Bob) Spears of Modesto; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and sister, Alys Marjorie (Cliff) Carrick of Corning, Calif.
