Grandma Joyce
Retired teacher, Braille translator, and beloved wife and mother, Joyce Burton, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Jan. 2, 2010. Aged 84, Joyce lived with her husband of 64 years, Donald Burton, at Covenant Village in Turlock for the past six years. Following their marriage in 1945, Joyce and Donald lived in the Northern California communities of Berkeley, Redwood City, San Bruno and Granite Bay. After her graduation from the University of Washington in 1945, Joyce devoted her time to raising her family. In 1965, she returned to school, earning her teaching credential and a MBA at San Francisco State University. She then taught business subjects in San Francisco city schools until retiring in 1986. Following her retirement, she became certified by the Library of Congress as a Braille translator and volunteered her skills by transcribing math textbooks for the Sacramento Public Library system.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Donald; her three children, Deborah Lafferty (Michael), Bruce Burton (Lynda) and Douglas Burton (Wendy); nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Joyce will be cremated and her ashes inurned at the Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, Calif., together with her parents. At her request, there are to be no services.
