Laurence was born in Sioux City, IA and was raised on a farm in Waterbury Nebraska and attended school there.  He was in the Navy for two years during World War II, when he returned home he farmed for 2 years and then came to California in 1956.  In 1959 he married Eleanor Skiles and together they shared 56 years of marriage.  Laurence worked for the City of Turlock for 16 years and Turlock High School for 12 years.  

He was a volunteer fire fighter in Turlock for 13 years.    He is survived by his wife Eleanor Surber; and siblings, Ralph Surber and Carol Angels.  Laurence was preceded in death  by his parents;  son Gary Surber and sister Catherine Clark. Viewing will be held at Allen Mortuary on Thursday, January 15th from 3:00-5:00p.m. Funeral will also be at Allen Mortuary on Friday, January 16, 2014 at 1:00p.m. with burial to follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
