A memorial service will be held for Leroy Sterling, 70, of Denair, at 2 p.m. Aug. 7 at Valley Christian Center, on the corner of Second and North streets in Ceres. He passed away on Saturday  in Turlock.
Leroy was born in Heavner, Okla. to Vera and Walter Sterling. He attended high school in Delano, Calif. In 1956, Leroy joined the United States Army, where he was stationed in Japan.
In 1960, he moved to Modesto where he met his wife, Florine. They were happily married for 47 years. He retired from James Rivers Paper Plant where he had worked for 33 years.
Leroy was a proud veteran. His hobbies included wood carving, hunting, camping, traveling and collecting knives, but he was most passionate about reading the word of God. His greatest desire was to be remembered as a friend of God. He was a member of Valley Christian Center, where he served on the board for many years.
Leroy was a devoted husband, and loving and proud father to his three children.
He is survived by his wife, Florine; sister, Corena Boren of Modesto; children, Gail Lambert of Ceres, Cammie (Randy) Melton of Denair and Matt (Tana) Sterling of Modesto; grandchildren, Blakley (Vicki) Lambert, Meg Lambert, Jennifer (Nick) Sawders, Natalie Melton, James Melton, Walter Sterling and Robert Muller; great grandchild, Jazzlyn Rose; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vera and Walter Sterling; and brothers, Billy and Kenneth Sterling.
