Marjorie Alfrida Johnson Flood
July 28, 1910 Feb. 2, 2011
Flood

Marjorie Johnson Flood was born to parents, Hulda Alfrida Mattson and Ernest Nathaniel Johnson, on a farm on Green Lake in Isanti County, Minn.  Her four siblings preceded her in death, two in infancy, and adult brothers, Russell and Marvin.

After completing high school, she attended Northwestern Bible School in Minneapolis, and then in the 1950s completed undergraduate work at Augsberg College during one to two year blocks of time in the United States.

Marjorie was a missionary, sponsored by the Evangelical Free Church, in Venezuela from 1935 to 1978.  In addition to church planting and nurture activities, she taught primary grade children initially, and then taught in a high school and a national Bible school. She later helped found what became a large primary/secondary school with capacity for boarding students, Instituto Moral y Luces in Maracay.  The early years in inland towns El Secorro and La Pascua were without electricity, running water, refrigeration and passable roads during the rainy season.  In the last eight years of her service there, however, she managed a Christian bookstore, El Faro, in downtown Caracas, with modern conveniences and a cosmopolitan environment.  She and some of her former students stayed in touch long after she retired and lived in Minneapolis and then in Turlock.

She married an acquaintance from her young adult years, Caryl D. Flood, a retired pastor, in June 1983, and together they were active in Crossroads Church in Turlock. They extended hospitality to, and enjoyed, Marjorie’s many friends and former co-workers who visited Turlock.

She is survived by step-children, Marilyn Flood and Ellen Flood Gephart; daughter-in-law, Linda Flood; and step-grandchildren, Bethany, Jonelle, Susanne and David Flood; as well as nieces, nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by her husband (1993); and step-son, Douglas Flood.

A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7 at Crossroads Church in Turlock. Donations in Marjorie’s memory may be directed to the Missions Fund of Crossroads Church, 1360 N. Johnson Rd., Turlock, CA 95382.

Services are under the direction of Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Service of Turlock, www.whitehurstnortondiasfunerals.com.
