Martha Virginia was born in Santa Monica, California to Lester L. Buerge and Ethel Buerge on
August 9, 1928. Six and a half years later, Verna, her sister was born into the family. At the
age of 14, she met the “love of her life” John Henry Boswell (Johnny) at a Bible Study. Soon
after, Johnny enlisted in the Navy going to World War II. She finished grammar school and high
school when the war ended and they were married on August 22, 1946. After Johnny
graduated from BIOLA College in 1949, he accepted the pastorate of the MIssionary Church in
Denair. They also began to raise their two children at this time.
After five years serving at the Missionary Church (now Valley Hope Church), Virginia was
supportive in ministry in Youth For Christ in Turlock and the Sacramento areas. Their ministry
continued at Grace Church in San Luis Obispo (8 years) as well as Calvary Baptist Church of
Lompoc (6 years). In 1983, they returned to Turlock and served in several Churches as interim
pastor before being on staff at the Evangelical Free Church (now Crossroads) and leading
Sunday services at Covenant Village. Virginia assisted in ministry by playing the piano for the
services. In 2012, they both retired from active ministry after 67 years of Christian service.
The Lord blessed them with two supportive loving children, Charles (Chuck) Boswell, (Judi) and
Nancy Hastain, (Tom). They have four grandchildren, Lisa, Rodd, Jason and Jodie, and six
great grandchildren, Shadon, Spencer, MaKenna, Aden, Kendall, and Payton
Virginia expressed her appreciation to the Lord for allowing her to serve Him “all the days of my
