Mary Evelyn Atwood passed away at home in Fresno on March 18, 2010. Evelyn was born in April 1920 in Rocky Ford, Colo. After growing up and going to college in Colorado, she lived in Turlock for about 60 years before moving to Fresno to live with her daughter. During Evelyn’s time in Turlock, she was involved in various civic projects, taught in Headstart, volunteered in Migrant Education and contributed to improving the west side of Turlock. For many years, Evelyn practiced as a beautician both in Turlock and Modesto.   
Evelyn always defended and helped those in need, advocated social justice and tried to become a better person each day. Evelyn lived her belief that we are all children of the same family of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Atwood; her son, William Atwood; and her sister, Helen Phillips.
She is survived by sisters, Clara Beth Wadhams, Jamie Dazey and Bernice Hammerquist; sons, John Atwood of Tulsa, Okla. and Guy Atwood of Lafayette, Calif.; daughter, Rita Atwood of Fresno; adoptive son, David Cone of Turlock; stepson, Jerry Bingel of Orange, Calif.; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren.  Her family loved her very much.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 26 at Turlock Memorial Park. Rev. Candy Preston from the Unity Church in Fresno will be conducting the informal service.
