Velma Watkins, 85, of Hilmar, passed away at Emanuel Medical Center. Velma was born in Stevinson, CA to Leonard and Bernice McKenzie. She grew up in Stevinson and graduated from Hilmar High School in 1949. After high school she worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Westside Hospital near Newman. She met Richard Watkins and later married in Reno, Nevada in 1954. Richard was in the Air Force, so the family moved to Denver, Nebraska, and Spokane before settling back in the Hilmar / Stevinson area. Velma was active in the Women’s Missionary Society of Stevinson Chapel. Velma and Richard have enjoyed square dancing, travelling, camping, and water-skiing. Velma loved the time she had to enjoy her family including four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Velma is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard Watkins, two daughters: Christi & Rick (spouse) Golden of Modesto, Kelly & Kurt (spouse) McKenzie of Ballico; three sisters: Angeline McKenzie and Dorothy Durham of Modesto, and Florine Ray of Napa; four grandchildren: Danielle, Courtney, Brian, Kristin, and one great grandchild Rylee.
