Vivian Alice Manha was born in Turlock, the daughter of Matheus and Maria Manha, sister of Helen Miguel and aunt of Genevieve Miguel, all deceased.  
She was a graduate of Turlock High School, Modesto Junior college and Stanford University, where she also earned a master’s degree. She taught mathematics and was Dean of Girls at Escalon High and Turlock High for 10 years and at the U.S. Air Force Dependents High School in England for one year. In 1959, she joined the staff at Modesto Junior College as a counselor and as the first regular staff woman mathematics instructor. Subsequently, she served as chairperson of counseling services and in January 1977, was the first woman to be appointed as Dean of Instruction.
She headed curriculum development for eight years and was particularly proud that M.J.C. was one of the first two community colleges to articulate its courses statewide with the state colleges and the University of California campuses.
She was a life-time member of Sacred Heart Church. Her affiliations included serving Turlock Salvation Army for over 20 years, serving on the boards of AAUW, Turlock Auditorium, Delta Kappa Gamma, Tuesday Reading Club, Stanislaus Retired Teachers, Friends of the Turlock Library and the John Pitman Scholarship Committee.
She was also a member of IDES, Escalon Historical Society, Y.L.I., Turlock Historical Society, Turlock Senior Citizens, U.P.E.C., Turlock Pentecost Association and U.P.P.E.C.
She is survived by nephew, Lionel Miguel and niece Tina Barr Gwinner, both of Modesto; four grandnephews; six great-grandnephews; and three great grandnieces, all of Las Vegas.
Visitation will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26 at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 27 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
