The Yosemite Community College District carries the vital responsibility of ensuring academic excellence at two separate campuses: Modesto Junior College and Columbia College in Sonora. However, for a period, YCCD faced a season of stagnation. While the institutions remained afloat through the dedication of a resilient faculty, the district’s board of trustees lacked a clear mandate, and the leadership provided little strategic direction.
That changed when a new wave of leadership revitalized the board. This "infusion of caring" challenged the status quo, replacing complacency with tough questions and a commitment to a defined path forward. Under the leadership of board president Milton Richards, Ed.D., a group of visionary board members refused to let the past dictate the future. Their collective determination to transform MJC and Columbia College into "shining stars" of education created a new culture of excellence.
Recognizing that true transformation requires a synergy between a bold board and a visionary executive, the timing of the previous chancellor’s retirement provided a pivotal opportunity. One year ago, the district hired Lena Tran, Ed.D., to spearhead this new era as its interim chancellor.
Today, YCCD is a trailblazer. With Richards driving the strategic momentum and Tran fueling the engine of innovation, the district is redefining education. They are turning mirrors into windows — replacing self-reflection with outward opportunity — and instilling in every student the conviction that they can change the world.
As a relentless advocate for students, the interim chancellor (a distinction that needs to be jettisoned) is unafraid to challenge systems that do not serve the mission. In an era of rising costs, YCCD stands as a beacon of accessible opportunity.
Looking toward 2026, every challenge is viewed as a catalyst for growth. There is no more effective agent for change than Tran, and the future of our colleges has never looked brighter.
Tran is a true educational trailblazer. She recognizes that in today’s economic climate, the accessible, high-quality training offered by MJC and Columbia is not just an alternative, it is a lifeline. She is an educator who views every problem as a fresh opportunity. With Tran at the helm and a board that champions her vision, 2026 promises to be a year of unprecedented achievement for our students and our community.
