Larsen was good for CSUS and good for the community

Editor,
There are a lot of people in this community of Turlock, businesses as well of course, who enjoy supporting the sports programs at California State University, Stanislaus, particularly the men’s basketball program. That is why it was discouraging to learn last spring that Coach Larsen, head coach of the men’s basketball team, was let go.
Coach Larsen worked effectively with the up and coming basketball players who came to CSUS over the past several years.
The inspiring work the coach did with the Summer Basketball Camps for the youth within the region, his ingratiating style of hosting field trip visits from local elementary schools, all the while teaching and modeling for his young athletes the valuable lessons of involving oneself in the community and working with young kids, was very much admired and appreciated. Coach Larsen’s personable and motivational personality was a natural fit that brought the community closer to the sports programs at CSUS.
It’s a shame Coach Larsen didn’t have the support — in terms of scholarship money and a full-time assistant — that was afforded previous Coach Terpstra, and is reportedly being afforded the incoming coach from Long Beach. It all seems so short-sighted by the Athletic Department of CSUS.
