Warriors lose opening game in out-of-state tourney

Northwest Nazarene used a strong second half to pull away from the Warriors as the Crusaders defeated the Cal State Stanislaus women’s basketball team 79-58 during the feature game of the Thanksgiving Classic on Friday in Nampa, Idaho.
NNU turned an eight-point first-half lead into a big win by outscoring Stanislaus 38-25 in the second half. The Warriors shot just 28.6 percent from the field in the second half.
Andreanna Marshall had 17 points to lead the Warriors. Katie Busi notched her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jeanette Rowe added 12 points for the Warriors.
The Warriors opened the game on a 5-0 run with Rowe hitting a three-pointer and Samantha Bertomen of Turlock High followed with a jumper. But a 19-7 NNU run quickly turned it around. Stanislaus stayed close and pulled within five with a pair of Bertomen free throws with 1:51 to go in the first half.
Kristin Hein's jumper at 10:49 gave Northwest Nazarene a 21-point lead at 65-44. Hein finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead NNU. She was 7-for-11 from the field.
Briaunna King had 15 points and seven rebounds and Janee Olds chipped in 11 points for the Crusaders (2-1).
The Warriors will play Central Washington today at 1 p.m. Central Washington (0-3) lost to Colorado Christian 81-70 on Friday.

Warriors set to play two games this weekend
After opening the season with wins over Cal Maritime and American Sports University, the Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team will get back into action against Bethany at 2 p.m. today in Atherton.
It’s the first of two games for the Warriors (2-0), who will face Menlo College at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the same location.

Despite hours of driving and speaking with supporters over the past day, Fresno State’s “Coaches Caravan” and athletics department pulled into the parking lot of Hilmar’s Great American Grill last Wednesday still full of energy for the last stop of their Rally the Valley tour.
