Local prep track and field programs continued navigating the Central California Athletic League schedule over the last two weeks in Modesto, with Turlock High School once again sweeping the team varsity competitions.
Turlock and crosstown counterpart Pitman High finished 1-2 in each the boys and girls team standings at the second CCAL meets of the season, led by more record-breaking performances.
At the CCAL boys meet at Gregori High School on March 18, the Bulldogs cruised to 208 team points, while the Pride posted 69. During the April 1 girls meet from Johansen High School, Turlock won with 229 points, with Pitman scoring 89.5 in the runner-up effort.
‘RECORD’ WEEKS
Pitman senior Avery Carlson outdid herself Wednesday by breaking her own school record in the 800-meter race. Her mark in the event is one of six school records she already holds between track and cross country.
Carlson’s latest time of 2:21.96 at the second CCAL meet was 0.36 seconds quicker than her previous best mark, achieved at the 65th Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut last April. The UC San Diego commit also holds the individual all-time program marks in the 1600- (4:59.41) 3200- (10:41.36) and 5,000-meter races (18:06.6), also breaking her own records in several instances. She is also a member of the record-holding 4x800 and 4000-meter distance medley relay teams, with times of 9:43.28 and 13:23.30, respectively.
The 800-meter win was one of three for Carlson last week. She also claimed the 1600 with a time of 5:09.74 and contributed on the 4x400 relay team, who alongside seniors Emerson Newton, Emma Jackson and Nayeli Mattison posted a time of 4:17.41.
As for Turlock senior Camden Smith, he also broke his own record, one he set just four days prior to the second CCAL meet. Smith first set a new mark in the 110-meter high hurdles at the Wolf Pack Relays in Tracy on March 14 with a time of 14.94. At the Johansen High track, he posted a time of 14.72.
Smith was also a multiple-event winner at CCAL 2 as he sped to a time of 11.20 in the 100-meter dash. In relays, he teamed up with senior Preston Ayala, junior Noel Garcia and sophomore Anthony Brown to win the 4x100 contest in 43.60.
Turlock senior Larson Wejmar, who recently committed to run at Stanislaus State next fall, joined in on the fun this past Saturday at the Stanford Invite by breaking his own school-best 3200 mark for the second time with a run of 9:14.01. Wejmar first claimed the record with a time of 9:31.06 at the West Coast Relays last April, and bested the mark by a whopping 6. 2 seconds a month later at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet.
At CCAL 2, Wejmar continued to dominate the distance competitions with a win in the 1600 with a time of 4:37.56.
