Hilmar High senior Makena Azevedo has followed in her brother Landon's footsteps by achieving massive success on the golf course during her last three years in the South Valley Foothill League. The senior ended her final season with a Most Valuable Player award for the third consecutive season.

On top of that feat, Azevedo also finished with the lowest round of the day for the South on Monday, in the VFL Tournament with an 87, beating out Orestimba's Joy Truniger by 11 strokes. Truniger finished second.

Azevedo was fairly consistent with a 43 in the front and a 44 on the back nine.

“If she can eliminate any double bogey's she would have a good chance of moving on to Master's,” said Hilmar head coach Ty Pettigrew.

Orestimba won the South, out of seven schools with a 465. Hughson got second with a 472 and Hilmar placed third with a 507.

“We are happy that the team is moving on to sections,” said Pettigrew.

Not only is it the third year in a row that Azevedo achieved an MVP award, but it is also the seventh consecutive season where the 'Jackets team has moved on to the section tournament.

Hilmar finished the season with a 6-6 record in league heading into the tournament after an interesting year with many newcomers for Pettigrew, but luckily Azevedo was leading the charge with her top performances week in and week out.

“We did lose a few that we shouldn't have but we still battled,” said Pettigrew. “Makena had another great year and I told her if she keeps her scores low then she could make it to Master's.”

The Division V CIF Sac-Joaquin Section tournament for Hilmar will be at Mickey Grove in Lodi at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
