WEST SACRAMENTO — Brent Rooker homered twice and had a career-high six RBI, including a three-run shot in the bottom of the 10th inning that gave the Athletics a 12-10 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday at Sutter Health Park.
Turlock native Tyler Soderstrom went 1 for 3 with a bases-loaded triple and two walks in the effort. He scored all three times he reached base for the Athletics, who rebounded from an 11-0 defeat Saturday and took two of three games from Houston for their first series win this season.
Soderstrom — after making his second straight Opening Day roster March 27 and in his first season since signing a 7-year, $86 million extension — has started the season 7 for 34 with six RBI.
The club had posted a 3-6 record heading into a three-game series that started Tuesday against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Soderstrom had two hits, including an RBI double, in the 5-3 series-opening loss, where the bullpen blew a 3-1 lead and allowed four runs in the eighth inning.
The A’s started the year with a three-game sweep on the road against reigning American League champion Toronto Blue Jays and then dropped two of three to the Atlanta Braves to wrap the road trip.
After the Yankees series concludes Thursday, the A’s will take the short trip down to Queens for a three-game weekend set against the New York Mets.
Morris returns to West Sacramento
Also on the road this week is the Athletics’ Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas Aviators, who began a six-game series with the Sacramento River Cats (San Francisco Giants) on Tuesday.
Pitman High alumnus Kade Morris is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday. First pitch at Sutter Health Park is slated for 6:45 p.m.
Morris, the No. 12-ranked prospect in the A’s farm system coming off a year in which he was named the Aviators’ Most Valuable Pitcher, was the club’s Opening Day starter on March 27. Facing the Salt Lake Bees of the Los Angeles Angels organization, Morris tossed allowed one earned run and struck out five over 5.2 innings en route to a 12-1 victory. In his second start April 2 against Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate Oklahoma City Comet, he earned a no decision in the team’s 4-2 win, going 5.1 frames and allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while punching out five.
Cederlind makes return to the mound
Nearly two years since throwing his last professional pitch, Turlock native Blake Cederling finds himself back in the fold. The Journal learned that the right-handed pitcher signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.
Cederlind, 30, reported to the team’s spring training and minor league facility in Scottsdale on Tuesday.
The flamethrower out of Turlock High School and Merced College made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 15, 2020 during the COVID-shortened, 60-game season. He was the sixth Bulldogs to ever appear in the big leagues. In five appearances as a Buc, he tossed four innings, striking out four batters and allowing two earned runs on three hits and a walk. But arm trouble followed, and he’d spend the next two years recovering from Tommy John surgery
Cederlind last pitched professionally in 2023 after signing a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres. He had seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings over five appearances between the Arizona Complex League and Double-A San Antonio, but had 11.57 ERA with six earned runs given up on five hits and seven walks ahead of his release.
Carrigg steals home again
For the second time in his three-year professional career, Turlock High graduate Cole Carrigg executed a straight steal of home plate.
The Colorado Rockies No. 6 prospect, who is fifth in all of Minor League Baseball with six steals through the first two weeks of the season, took off in the seventh inning of Triple-A Albuquerque's 5-4 win over the Reno Aces.
Carrigg, 23, recorded a straight steal on Aug. 1 last year as a member of Double-A Hartford on his way to breaking the team’s single-season stolen base record with 46.
Now one step away from the big leagues, the super utilityman out of San Diego State is 10 for 38 with a double, triple, two walks, four RBI and four runs scored through the Isotopes’ first 10 games.
Hagens shining in Taiwan
Bradin Hagens, the only alumnus of Pitman High School to appear in a major league game, is still going strong at 36 years old.
The 2007 Pride graduate and 2024 school Hall of Fame inductee re-signed with the TSG Hawks of the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan in December. Across 25 starts in 2025, Hagens posted a 13-3 record, 1.89 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 109 strikeouts over 152.1 innings.
Through two starts (11.1 innings) to begin the 2016 season, Hagens is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 16 punchouts.
Crowley inks deal with Roadsters
A familiar face will be playing home games as a professional at John Thurman Field this summer, as the independent expansion franchise Modesto Roadsters have signed former Hilmar High standout and Fresno State pitcher Treven Crowley.
Crowley, a right-handed pitcher, graduated from Hilmar in 2020. He participated in the Roadsters’ open tryouts on March 14. The team officially announced his signing on Saturday.
In his junior season in 2019, his last full season as a Yellowjacket due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Crowley posted a 1.96 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 53. 2 innings over 12 starts.
Pitching for Fresno State in 2021, Crowley tossed 8.2 innings in eight appearances and registered a 12.46 ERA. Off the mound, he earned Academic All-Mountain West honors.
