Though Cole Carrigg hopes that his time in Double-A Hartford is limited and that he continues climbing up the minor league ladder, he will be engrained in Yard Goats history for the foreseeable future for setting the standard in thievery.

Last Wednesday against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Toronto Blue Jays organization, the 2020 Turlock High graduate and the second-ranked prospect in the Colorado Rockies farm system stole his 36th base of the year, tying the Yard Goats single-season franchise record.

The history-making theft came in the first inning. Carrigg, starting in center and slotted in the leadoff spot (as he has for most of his professional career), reached base on a walk against right-handed starter Grant Rogers, whose very next pitch was dropped behind home plate and allowed Carrigg to slide in safely into second base without issue.

The speedster tied Rosell Herrera, who swiped 36 bags for the Goats in 2016. He’d later appear in 149 big-league games between 2018 and 2019.

Of his 43 attempts, Carrigg has only been caught seven times.

Since being drafted 65th overall by the Rockies in the 2023 MLB Draft, Carrigg’s speed has been one of his strongest attributes in the eyes of talent evaluators. Now in his third season as a professional, Carrigg is widely considered to have some of the best wheels in all of baseball.

Through 88 games this season (381 plate appearances and 332 at-bats), Carrigg is slashing .244/.338/.401/.739 with 81 hits, including 12 doubles, 5 triples and 10 home runs. He has driven in 44 runs while scoring 60 times himself.
