After a breakout 2025 season, Tyler Soderstrom is now the owner of the largest guaranteed contract in the storied history of the Athletics organization, according to multiple reports.
News broke on Christmas morning that Soderstrom and the A’s are in agreement on a seven-year, $86 million contract extension, a deal that includes an eighth-year club option and has escalators that max out at $131 million. The extension was first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN and later confirmed by the Journal.
Previously, the largest contract handed out by the Athletics came last offseason, when the organization inked free-agent starter Luis Severino to a three-year, $67 million contract.
Last offseason, Brent Rooker and Lawrence Butler agreed to contract extensions with the A's, and General Manager David Forst acknowledged at this year's Winter Meetings that the front office had been actively exploring ways to continue the trend with other members of its young core, which features Nick Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, Shea Langeliers and Soderstrom.
Soderstrom, 24, is represented by Paragon Sports International.
A native of Turlock, Soderstrom appeared in 158 games for the A’s this past season in his first full season in the majors, only second on the team behind Rooker (162).
At the plate, the left-hander was one of the most dangerous bats in the youthful A’s lineup. He swatted 25 home runs and drove in 93 runs as he batted .276 (155-for-561) with a .346 on-base percentage, .474 slugging percentage and a .820 OPS. His 93 RBI led all Athletics.
Soderstrom, who throws right-handed, showed off his defensive versatility by splitting time between first base and left field.
Despite not having played the outfield since he was in Little League prior to late April, the Turlocker was named a Gold Glove finalist. In 108 games in left field, Soderstrom recorded 231 putouts and 11 assists, while only having two errors. The assists were second-most among AL left fielders. Additionally, Soderstrom finished with five outs above average, tied for the most in left field in the AL, and was second in defensive runs saved with 10.
Soderstrom's rapid rise to stardom began in 2020 when he was drafted 26th overall as a catcher out of Turlock High School by the Athletics. Since making his big league debut on July, 14 of 2023, the organization’s former No. 1 prospect has hit .250 with a .754 OPS with 37 home runs and 126 RBI.
