A man’s attempt to steal a motorcycle from a repair shop was cut short when he was confronted by Turlock police officers.

Officers were in the 600 block of Lander Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Monday when they spotted a man pushing a sport-model motorcycle down the road.

The suspect, later identified at Matthew Souza, 18, spotted the officers and dumped the bike in the middle of Angelus Street, before running away, according to the police report.

Souza attempted an escape by running to a nearby vacant business, but was boxed in by the officers and was taken into custody.

It was later determined the motorcycle had been stolen from an auto repair shop on Lander.

Souza was charged with auto theft and resisting arrest.
