A suspected drunken driver tried to avoid arrest by outrunning Turlock police officers in his vehicle and later on foot after he crashed.

And all of it occurred after officers woke him from his slumber inside his vehicle.

The incident began around 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of W. Hawkeye Avenue and Golden State Boulevard, where officers first encountered 24-year-old Jorge Martinez asleep behind the wheel.

The officers knocked on the window, waking Martinez up. Instead of rolling down his window, Martinez decided to drive off, the Turlock Police Department reported.

His attempt to escape the officers came to an abrupt end moments later when he crashed while making a turn onto N. Walnut Road.

Martinez allegedly ran from his vehicle, but was stopped by the pursuing officers. He was booked for suspicion of driving under the influence.
