A fire of a modular building located behind the Assyrian-American Civic Club is being investigated as a possible arson.
The fire was reported just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at 2618 N. Golden State Blvd. It originated on a deck outside the portable building, according to the Turlock City Fire Department.
Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the exterior of the building, but the structure still had severe damage. The fire was under control within 20 minutes, the fire department reported.
The fire caused about $15,000 in damage.
According to the firefighters on scene, the building was used by smokers.
The police department is investigating the fire as an arson until it is determined otherwise, said Investigations Sgt. Russell Holeman.
