Freeway collision injures Hilmar man

A 20-year Hilmar man sustained serious head injuries after his vehicle collided with a big rig on Highway 99 Thursday morning.

The collision occurred about 10:15 a.m. Thursday on Highway 99 near Westside Boulevard.

The 20-year-old was driving southbound on the highway in a Dodge Neon when he suddenly lost control of his vehicle and collided with a big rig that was also traveling southbound.

The impact caused serious damage to the car, causing the driver to be pinned inside the vehicle. Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to extract him from the crumpled vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man was taken to a Modesto hospital by air ambulance. His current condition is unknown.

The driver of the big rig did not sustain any injuries.

The collision caused a slow down on the highway for a few hours.

The collision remains under investigation.
