Highway 108 collision claims life of Turlock woman
emergency

A Turlock woman was killed in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Highway 108 near Oakdale, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The deceased was identified as Norma Garcia, 27, of Turlock.

The collision happened shortly after 6 a.m. Friday on Highway 108, east of Lancaster Road.

Garcia was driving a 2006 Volkswagen sedan westbound on Highway 108. A 2018 International box truck was traveling eastbound on the highway.

The two vehicles were approaching a bend in the road from opposite directions, when, for an as yet undetermined reason, Garcia allowed her vehicle to drift into the eastbound lane directly into the path of the semi-truck.

The vehicles collided head-on and came to rest within the eastbound traffic lane, according to the CHP.

Garcia sustained serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. She had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The driver of the semi, Eusebio Ponce, 56, of Santa Clara was not injured in the crash.

It is unknown at this time if drugs and/or alcohol were a contributing factor in this collision.

Caltrans was summoned to the collision scene and provided one-way traffic control with minimal delay to passing motorists, the CHP reported.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
