A report of a dog locked in a vehicle turned into an arrest of a man on weapon and drug charges.
The Turlock Police Department received a call around 5:30 p.m. Monday of a dog locked inside a truck in the parking lot of the Target store at 3000 Countryside Dr. The temperature outside the truck was more than 100 degrees, said Lt. Ron Reid.
Officers found the dog, along with a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the truck, Reid said.
About 10 minutes after the officers arrived, the owner of the truck, Robert Zavala, 40, came out of the store and when asked, admitted to having marijuana in his truck.
A search of the truck turned up 18.9 grams of marijuana and three joints, Reid said. Officers also found a loaded and concealed semi-automatic handgun in the truck.
Zavala was taken into custody, whereupon officers found him in possession of 1.35 grams of methamphetamine, Reid said.
He was booked on weapons and narcotics charges.
