A 57-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a train in Turlock on Saturday afternoon.

Both the Turlock police and fire departments were dispatched to the area of Fulkerth Road and Golden State Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. Saturday after being notified of a man struck by a passing train.

The preliminary investigation suggests the man was standing too close to the tracks and was clipped by the passing train, said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Russ Holeman.

The man was breathing and conscious when found, though with visible serious injuries, Holeman said. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby park where he was transferred to an air ambulance and flown to an area hospital with major injuries.

The incident caused the train to block several intersections in Turlock for about two hours.
