Night out ends with assault, shooting at vehicle

A drunken fight outside a downtown Turlock bar on Sept. 25, in which one man fired several rounds into the engine of a woman’s vehicle, came to an end with two arrests, the Turlock Police Department reported.

There were no injuries reported from the shooting. The car did have significant damage.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 25, the Turlock Police Department dispatched officers to a bar in the 100 block of S. First Street after receiving reports of a shooting in the area.

The first officers to arrive found several victims who said they had been assaulted by two men. One woman pointed to her car and said one of the suspects had shot her engine.

A description of the suspects was given and within a very short timeframe and near the scene, officers had detained two men. Riverside resident Adrian Valencia, 30, was detained in the back parking lot and had been pointed out by witnesses as the suspect who punched one of the assault and battery victims, said Turlock Police spokeswoman Dominique Sanchez.

The other suspect, Atwater resident Jose Linares, 28, matched the description of the shooter, and was observed exiting a white Ford Focus at the south end of the street, Sanchez said.

“Officers determined the two detainees had been involved in the incident,” Sanchez said.

According to the victims and witnesses, Valencia physically assaulted at least one person and Linares brandished a pistol at several people in the alley and the parking lot. Linares reportedly broke the window of a vehicle and when confronted by the owner, Linares shot several rounds into the engine compartment of the unoccupied vehicle.

Linares was arrested and booked for vandalism, negligent discharge of a firearm, carrying a loaded concealable firearm, brandishing and two misdemeanor warrants.

Valencia was arrested and booked for felony battery charges.
