The Merced County Sheriff’s Department has released the name of the man found dead in a car near a Stevinson bar where a fight had been reported, but now investigators are unsure the death was a homicide.

The deceased has been identified as Melchor Mino Holguin III, 30, of Atwater. Holguin was found dead inside a car on Edminister Road, a short distance from the Stevinson Bar and Grill on Third Street.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m. June 4 sheriff’s deputies were summoned to the Stevinson Bar and Grill for a report of a fight. Bar patrons told the deputies that a fight had occurred at the bar earlier and that bar security had escorted all those involved outside, but that some remained on scene. Some of the patrons felt like trouble was brewing and called the sheriff’s department, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Delray Shelton.

As deputies were looking into the fight, a call was received about a deceased man in a vehicle parked on Edminister Road.

Initially the death was being investigated as a homicide, but now an autopsy report has ruled the cause of death was blunt force trauma from a car accident.

The case has been sent to the Merced County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
