A man pumping gas at a Delhi service station was robbed of $10 by an armed suspect.
The Merced county Sheriff’s Department arrested Steven Downing, 30, of Delhi. He was charged with armed robbery and a parole violation. He remains in custody at the Merced County Jail without bail, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.
The incident began around 6 p.m. Saturday at the M&M Market in the 16000 block of Letteau Avenue. The male victim was approached by a man who asked him for $10.
The victim stated he did not have any money and the suspect kept persisting until he finally opened his shirt and showed the victim a knife he had tucked in his waistband. The suspect said he had just been released from prison and had no problems stabbing him, MacKenzie said.
The victim handed over $10 and the suspect got into a truck with another person and drove away.
Deputy James Weaver was able to identify the suspect as Downing and obtained an arrest warrant for him. On Monday, detectives and a state parole agent went to the 9000 block of Hinton Avenue in Delhi and arrested Downing without incident.
Downing denied the allegations and detectives are still looking into whether the driver of the truck had knowledge of the incident.
