A man found dead in a Stanislaus County jail cell has been identified as a Turlock resident.

Daniel Chavez, 24, of Turlock was identified as the deceased.

Chavez was found unresponsive in his cell by his cell mate on the morning of Jan. 9. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

There was no apparent trauma and nothing suspicious about the death. Toxicology results are pending.

Chavez was booked into the jail on Oct. 16, 2019 on charges of assault likely to cause great bodily injury, vandalism and disobeying a court order.

A family member of Chavez’s sent a message to the Journal questioning the circumstances of his death.

“As a family we are lost and need some closure,” the message read. “Stanislaus County Sheriff's came to my mother in law's yesterday and simply said he took something and they don't know what. They won't tell us nothing else. Daniel was only 24 years old and leaves behind a child.”

A GoFundMe page states Chavez is survived by his wife and a 4-year-old daughter. The page is seeking funds to help with funeral expenses and can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/daniel-orlando-chavez.
