A 36-year-old man was arrested for robbery after allegedly violently ripping a necklace from a woman’s neck Friday afternoon.

According to the Turlock Police Department, Manjit Bains pulled up alongside a woman in the 1800 block of English Avenue and asked her if she knew a person he was trying to find. The woman said she didn’t know that person.

Bains got out of his vehicle and was looking in the back seat when he suddenly grabbed the woman and attempted to pull her necklace off.

The 50-year-old woman struggled with Bains, but he overpowered her and pulled the necklace off her, Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis said.

Bains fled the area in his vehicle.

The victim was able to give police officers a description of Bains, his vehicle and a partial license plate number and he was spotted a short time later in the area of G and S. First streets.

Bains initially tried to outrun the police but changed his mind and yielded to the traffic stop on S. Berkeley Avenue.

The victim identified him as the robber and he was booked for robbery and committing a felony while out on bail, Lewis said.
