A collision involving a Turlock Unified School District bus that struck a woman in a crosswalk is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
The woman, identified as Aubelia Rivera-Zamor, 62, of Salem, Ore., sustained unspecified injuries after being struck by the bus as it made a left turn. The impact knocked her to the ground, but she was alert when emergency responders arrived at the scene.
The collision was reported at 11:27 a.m. Monday at the intersection of North Avenue and N. Olive Avenue.
The TUSD bus, a 2005 Thomas, driven by Edwin Bettencourt, 62, of Hilmar was eastbound on North Avenue and was making a left turn on a green light onto N. Olive Avenue when it struck Rivera-Zamor as she walked in the crosswalk, according to the CHP.
The bus was moving at a slow speed at the time of impact.
The CHP said Bettencourt did not see the woman crossing and that he should have yielded to her. The bus driver is not currently driving a route while the investigation is conducted.
There were 40 students and staff from Crowell Elementary on the bus at the time of the collision. They were headed to Stan State at the time. No injuries from those on the bus were reported, according to the CHP.
The CHP is always the investigative agency when a collision involves a school bus.
