Womans kindness repaid with carjacking

A woman who was giving a ride to a couple of acquaintances became the victim of a carjacking after the man pulled a knife on her and took her car.

The woman was not injured in the ordeal and the suspect, identified as Claudio Cortez, 24, was eventually apprehended by the Turlock Police Department.

The carjacking was reported to the police department around 9 p.m. Tuesday. The woman told investigators she had been giving a ride two a man and a woman she was acquainted with, when the man pulled out a knife and ordered her to get out of the car. The police report stated the carjacking happened in the 200 block of Almond Avenue.

Later that evening an officer spotted the vehicle in the area of N. Olive Avenue and E. Canal Drive and a high-risk traffic stop was performed. Cortez was taken into custody without incident.

The other woman in the vehicle at the time of the carjacking was found not to have played a role in the theft.
