Brown Elementary invites students, community to first-ever color run
color run

There is more than one goal of Brown Elementary School’s color run later this month. According to principal Nicole Aviles, the event hopes to not only raise money for the school’s Parent Teacher Association, but also to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for students and the community, and — of course — to douse runners in colorful fun.

“It’s Brown’s goal to encourage students, as well as the whole community, to live an active and healthy lifestyle,” said Aviles. “We encourage our community to participate in it not only because it is fun, but it’s also a healthy alternative to watching TV on a Saturday morning.”

The event is hosted by Brown Elementary PTA with hopes to raise funds for school facility improvements and student support. According to Aviles, past PTA fundraisers have funded a new water fountain and trash can for the kindergarten yard, shade awning for the front of the school, and two “buddy benches.”

“They’re already installed,” said Aviles of the benches. “We asked all the classrooms to either write a poem, opinion piece, narrative or to draw a picture to represent what the buddy benches are for and on April 28 we plan to dedicate the benches.”

Also during the color run event, Aviles said that there will be a selfie station for pictures and music from 91.9FM KCSS, which is a non-commercial educational radio station based on the campus of Stanislaus State.

“They’ll be out here cheering people on,” added Aviles.

The 1 Mile/5K Kids Run option for students in sixth grade and under costs $15 and the 5K Run/Walk for all other ages costs $25. Those who register before April 29 are guaranteed a free pair of glasses and color packet, and water and snacks will also be available for purchase on race day.

Participants who bring a photo or school ID can pick up their race packet and register from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on April 28. Race packet pickup and registration will be available the day of the event from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on April 29. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with the Kid’s 1 Mile Run, followed by the 5K Run/Walk at 9:30 a.m.
