CSU Stanislaus application deadline nears
First-time freshmen that hope to attend California State University, Stanislaus in September 2010 must submit applications by Nov. 30.
The deadline comes earlier than in years past due to a CSU system-wide effort to reduce student enrollment. State budget cuts have forced the reduction in students, according to CSU Stanislaus President Ham Shirvani.
As new admissions for 2010 winter and spring terms were closed in July due to budget cuts, more applications than usual are expected for the fall term. The deadline for incoming transfer students remains Feb. 1, 2010, but such students are urged to apply early.

Scholarships awarded to CSU Stanislaus freshmen
Thirteen students, including three Turlockers, have been selected as 2009-10 recipients of CSU Stanislaus Presidential and Provost Scholarships. The academic standouts selected as President’s Scholars will receive $12,500 per year for four years, while Provost’s Scholars will receive $3,500 per year for four years.
Turlock High School graduate Anne Coleman will receive the Presidential Scholarship as she majors in biology, with hopes of becoming a speech and language pathologist.
Pitman High School graduate Tyler Harris, who will pitch for the Warriors baseball team but has not declared his major, will receive the Provost Scholarship. Connecting Waters Charter High School graduate Chelsea Lopes, a liberal studies major with a concentration in elementary education, will also receive a Provost Scholarship.
Paulo Costa, Valedictorian of Hilmar High School, will receive a Provost Scholarship as he pursues a degree in either mathematics or physics at CSU Stanislaus.
Japanese-American soldiers’ tale told in film
“Only The Brave,” a feature film retelling the story of two Japanese-American World War II units, will be screened at the Merced College Theatre at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 7. The 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team rescued the 300 men of the 141st Regiment of Texas, while suffering 700 casualties.
Director Lane Nishikawa will be in attendance to answer questions, sign autographs, and sell DVD copies of the film.
