Modesto Junior College awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to 246 students for the fall 2014 term at their recent annual scholarship ceremony.

The honored recipients stand out in academic or technical subjects, possess a significant financial need, partake in community services, or have overcome a personal challenge.

“Just opening the first scholarship award notification, I literally let out a sigh of relief,” said Monica Aguilera, first generation college student who was awarded four scholarships. “Receiving these awards means that I am able to buy the books and school materials that I need. I am grateful for all of the generous donors who make a difference in a student’s life.”

The donors that Aguilera is referring to are private individuals, families, trusts, and community organizations who donate to the MJC Foundation.

“Donors to the MJC Foundations play a critical role in helping these hardworking students to pursue and achieve their educational goals,” said Dean of Advancement and Executive Director of the MJC Foundation George Boodrookas.

Boodrookas went on to add that donors were able to contribute $275,000 to scholarships and campus programs last year. In addition, the college was able to offer $450,000 in scholarships to over 600 students—a number that the director hopes to achieve again this year.

“These scholarships I received are tremendous,” said Hazem Nasher, administration of justice major who received two scholarships. “They are immense in helping with extra money for college fees, parking passes, books, gas, etc. Words can’t express the gratitude I feel for Modesto Junior College, the scholarship program, and the donors.”
