The Department of Mathematics Grants at Stanislaus State is once again providing an opportunity for local students to enhance their academic skills with its HiMAP 6.0 STREAM Academy.

The STREAM academy is an academic program designed to enhance cognitive, reasoning and critical thinking skills for students in a number of areas, including science, technology, reading and writing, engineering, agriculture and mathematics.

“Now that students are back in school, parents are looking for help with Common Core math homework, doing book reports...we are ready to embrace them all,” said Director of Mathematics Grants Viji Sundar.

Students are encouraged to bring homework, textbooks, class notes and any other schoolwork falling under the STREAM disciplines. Academy activities include coaching sessions in integrated mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, general science, writing and graphic arts, and there will also be presentations on topics such as study skills, note-taking, college readiness, scholarships and financial aid.

The academy is open to students in grades 4-12, and three sub-sessions will be offered. Sub-session one will be held on Wednesdays beginning on Sept. 14 through Dec. 7. Sub-session two will be offered on Thursdays from Sept. 15 to Dec. 1, and sub-session three will take place on Saturdays from Sept. 17 until Dec. 3.

Each sub-session will take place on the Stanislaus State campus. Sub-session one will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 100 of Demergasso-Bava Hall. Sub-session two will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 235 of Bizzini, and sub-session three will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Rooms 127 and 129 of the Science 1 Building.

All three sub-sessions cost $50 each, and registration includes a free T-shirt, which is part of the HiMAP 6.0 STREAM Academy uniform and must be worn to class. Students can drop-in to a session for $20. Registration is online only at www.commerce.cashnet.com/Math1, and while there is no registration deadline, seating is limited to 40 students per sub-session.

An information session and orientation for the academy will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 10 in Room 101 of Naraghi Hall at Stanislaus State. The orientation is open to parents and prospective HiMAP participants.
