THS debaters earn eloquent victories

Turlock High School’s Speech and Debate team continued its complete dominance of opposing teams at a recent tournament.

The Bulldogs took home first place overall in numerous individual events as well a Debate Sweepstakes at the Lodi High School Tournament held on Sept. 24. Speech and Debate Coach Michele VanNieuwenhuyzen credits the students’ active commitment to the club and elective classes.

Sophomore Jonas Trevethan earned first place in the Lincoln-Douglas debate and second in Impromptu. Captain Rachel Salisbury, senior, captured first place in Original Oration and second in Extemporaneous. Senior John Silva earned second place in Interpretation and third place in Prose and Poetry and senior Daniella Youkhana won second place in Duo Interpretation. 

Other first place finishers included Trevor Holbrook and Elijah Mays, Duo Interpretation; Justin Baker, Dramatic Interpretation; Aaron Simmons, Thematic Interpretation; Mackenzie Rowe, National Extemporaneous; Mallori Powell and Lauren Fernandes, Public Forum Debate; and Keegan and Sarah Gemperle, Public Forum Debate.
