In a new Lobby Gallery exhibition, “Our Sierra: Photographs & Pastels by David & Vivian Patton,” the Carnegie Arts Center shares the artwork of David and Vivian Patton. This Groveland-based couple create work that reflects their personal experience living in the Mother Lode and Sierra foothills. Inspired by the landscape, history, and wildlife around them, their artwork in pastels and photographs brings the beauty of the region to life.
“This exhibit is about what I have seen and felt for over 50 years traveling through the Sierra and Motherlode,” Vivian explains. “David and I have hiked many trails in the Sierra and visited the remnants of its history. Our ventures have introduced me to the different features of nature and its transformations. They have also shown me how people existed and left their mark on the land.”
Vivian’s pastels often push the boundaries of naturalistic color and space, emphasizing the emotional responses the artist has to place and memory.
David adds, “I have been fortunate to experience this grand slice of earth's beauty for most of my life. It is always a humbling experience to feel, hear, touch, smell, and see the diversity of this part of California.”
His photographs reveal magnificent vistas and explore intimate details. Together, these two intrepid artists hope the exhibition opens the door of curiosity and adventure for viewers, motivating everyone to “go see for yourself.”
The exhibition will be on display from Oct. 13 through Jan. 23, 2027. A free public reception for the artists will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 15.
The Carnegie is located at 250 N. Broadway, Turlock. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission to the Lobby Gallery is free.
