Students at Central Valley High School in Ceres received a visit from Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) early Tuesday morning, learning about U.S. government while showing the Congressman their robust Agricultural Department.
As Denham makes his way through the Central Valley this week, he stopped by the high school to talk with a class of seniors, offering them insight to life in government. Students were given the opportunity to ask the Congressman questions, as many expressed interest in learning more about how state and federal government works.
“The students I met on today’s tour have bright futures ahead of them,” said Denham after meeting with the students.
Following the open discussion, Denham took a tour of the school’s Agricultural Department, where students are being taught how to farm, when and how to plant various crops, while also learning about farm equipment and animals.
Central Valley High School offers a vast array of Agricultural classes, including Ag Biology, Ag Mechanics, Floriculture, Welding, Power Mechanics, Landscaping, Horticulture, Vet Science, Advanced Animal Science and Ag Marketing.
In addition to the school’s extraordinary Ag center, students can partake in the Supervised Agriculture Experience Project, an agricultural education program composed of classroom instruction, Future Farmers of America, and supervised experience where students learn through hands-on practice.
With the help of agricultural teachers, students develop a project based on entrepreneurship, internships at local farms or ranches, research and experimentation, while exploring careers by attending an agricultural career fair.
During the tour of the school’s Ag Center, Denham spoke with students about their projects within the Ag Department.
“Central Valley’s Ag program is exemplary,” said Denham.
On Tuesday, Denham also attended a service medal presentation in Modesto for Glen Grose, a local 83-year-old Korean War veteran. During the ceremony, Denham presented Grose with five medals, including his Purple Heart Combat Infantry Badge, for his service in the U.S. Army.
Denham will finish his tour on Thursday in Ripon, where he will attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ripon Consolidated Fire Station #3.
