History of business:

When Evan and Daisy Swearingen first began working with wood at their Denair home just six months ago, the husband and wife viewed it as something fun to do with their downtime. Now, the couple can hardly keep up with the demand for their custom cornhole boards.

“Cornhole is a game that we had played and very much enjoyed. We just kind of felt like building something one day, something that we could use and have fun with, and the first set of cornhole boards is what came out of it,” Evan said.

So many orders have come in for cornhole boards that Swearingen Woodworking is solely producing pieces for the fun lawn game, but eventually Evan and Daisy hope to expand beyond just the boards. The painstaking process for each set takes 10 hours minimum and produces stunning results, with the woodworking team creating custom boards that feature anything from baseball team logos to different nations’ flags.

Cornhole boards have even been ordered by couples getting married as a way to remember their guests. The boards provide a fun form of entertainment during the reception, and guests can also sign the set as a keepsake for the couple.

No matter what is featured on Swearingen Woodworking’s boards, the customer’s reaction is always the same.

“I have been really fortunate that so far there have been nothing but positive reactions to my work,” Evan said. “It is very satisfying to me to see the reaction that customers have had, and it’s been great to be contacted by folks within and out of the area knowing that there are lots of people and/or businesses that make cornhole boards, yet customers have chosen Swearingen Woodworking.”

Some of the pair’s favorite boards that they have created for clients include a San Francisco Giants-themed set and a recently-completed set for the Dennis Wallace Memorial Golf Tournament.

“This set was very special to me and I could tell by the recipient’s reaction that it was very special to them as well,” Evan said. “This set is staying with the foundation; I was honored to say the least.”

The popularity of their cornhole boards is not lost upon the Swearingens and comes from a combination of their woodworking skill and the game itself.

“I think it has really gained popularity because it does not necessarily require a skill to play it,” Evan said. “It’s a game that brings friends and families together, and our custom-built boards reflect the owner’s personality and any interests they have.”

Requests for Swearingen Woodworking’s custom cornhole boards are made using their Facebook and Instagram accounts and cost $250 per set. So far, according to Evan, there has not been a customer request that was unable to be fulfilled.
