A 40-year-old man looking for recyclables along a Turlock road was struck by a sports utility vehicle and died Friday night.

The man’s name has not been released because officials are trying to locate his next of kin, the Merced County Coroner’s Office reported.

The collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. Friday on Golden State Boulevard, just south of the county line.

The victim was riding a bicycle in the center median in search of cans and bottles to recycle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Elise Bryn, 26, of Woodlake was driving a 2002 Chevy Suburban southbound on Golden State Boulevard at an approximate speed of 55 mph.

According to the CHP, the man was riding his bike and facing the oncoming traffic. Bryn told the officers she didn’t see the man coming towards her vehicle.

The left side of the SUV struck the bicyclist. The force of the impact sent the man over the hood of the SUV and onto the pavement. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
