December is a time for memories and fun, but when all of that fades you may find yourself needing a pick me up.

Manuel Luis has the perfect caffeine solution as he specializes in espresso and cappuccinos at his new coffee shop, Luis Coffee & Tea.

“I take a lot of pride in my in espresso and cappuccinos,” said Luis. “They’re European style and I think that my customers will enjoy the authenticity of them.”

Luis owned a coffee shop in Portugal twenty years ago and when he recently retired in Turlock he felt that another coffee shop would be a good fit for the area and a good thing to keep him busy.

“When I retired I still wanted to have something to do,” said Luis. “I loved my shop in Portugal and I just really enjoy a good cup of coffee.”

There’s free Wi-Fi at the shop for those who are interested in getting some work done or to just hang out.

“I want students to be able to have the shop as a resource to be able to get homework done, but I also want them to be able to sit down and enjoy each other’s company,” he said.

A warm towel drapes the clean cups on top of the espresso machine to keep them warm, because Luis says that’s how every good cappuccino should be served.

Luis Coffee & Tea also has fresh pastries daily that include Portuguese donuts, muffins, Danish rolls, cinnamon rolls, bagels and much more. 

“What sets my shop apart is not only the prices, but I think that overall my drinks are just better; the quality itself is better,” said Luis.

The coffee shop opened Nov. 15 and is complete with a smoothie and juice bar that has a variety of different flavors; Luis says the favorites are berry, mango and peach.
