The Turlock Garden Club will hold its second annual plant sale on April 15 at 2531 El Camino Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The sale originally was scheduled for April 1, but the recent storms have impacted club members’ ability to plant this season.

“The cool, wet winter has really slowed things down,” said TGC co-president Susan Nystrom. “Hopefully, with two more weeks, we’ll have some decent sized plants that people will want to buy.”

The club’s inaugural plant sale showed great promise.

“It really went well,” said Nystrom. “It was a last-minute, throw-together thing and all the members brought their plants over to my place and set up on my driveway. And we made $900. We thought it was very successful.”

The club’s 2023 spring Garden Tour is slated for April 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at six homes throughout Turlock.

The tour will include stops at the homes of Pat Holloway on Shady Lane, Jay and Carol Berry on Augusta Place, Joey and Kim Mattos on Stone Meadow Road, Debbie Koftinow on Sebastian Drive, Betty Holmes on Sebastian Drive, and Jim and Carol McRoberts on Briar Road. Refreshments will be served and a raffle will be held at the McRoberts residence.

“Docents will be there to direct visitors into the back yards,” said Nystrom. “All the homes all have different styles to them. Shady Lane home is a small back yard, but fixed up really cute. Then we have some big back yards, all with different styles and different themes. All very interesting.”

Tour tickets are $25 and are on sale now from TGC members or at the TGC general meeting. Tickets can also be picked up at The Greenery Nursery and Garden Shop, 742 E. Olive Ave., Turlock, or at Westurf Nursery, 1612 Claus Road, Modesto, beginning in April.

The club has yet to determine whether the tour will be postponed in case of inclement weather.

“We have not discussed that because we normally don’t have, to,” said Nystrom. “We’ll need to discuss that at our April board meeting because, you know, it could happen.”

The club’s next general meeting will be held April 10 at the Carnegie Arts Center, 250 N. Broadway.

Breanna Cartwright, of the Fresh Ideas Flower Company, will be the guest speaker and the topic will be spring flower arranging.

“The program will start at 12:30 p.m. and we’ll have our meeting after the presentation,” said Nystrom. “You can bring your own lunch at about 11:30. And since it’s the day after Easter, we encourage attendees to wear an Easter bonnet.”

Cookies and coffee will be provided and there will be a raffle during the meeting.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in joining the club. Dues to join the club are $20 per year.

The Turlock Garden Club was founded in 1948 by Mrs. Gerald James. Over the years, the club has worked side by side with city planners to help beautify Turlock, taking care of the downtown flower pots, as well as the flowers at Jessica’s House and the roses at the Carnegie Arts Center.
