The opening of Hauck's earlier this month generated a lot of buzz from Turlockers excited to see the historic downtown building and one-time pharmacy repurposed into a bar and grill — and it also generated donations for local athletic programs.

Hauck's opened its doors to hungry Turlockers May 10, 11 and 12 for a soft opening, before the restaurant's grand opening on May 13. During the soft opening, all items on the menu were offered for a $10 donation. The $8,500 collected during Hauck's soft opening is being donated to Stanislaus State ($2,500), Turlock High ($2,000), Pitman High ($2,000) and Turlock Christian High ($2,000) athletic programs.

"We just really wanted to give back and we thought our opening was a great way to do that," said Hauck's executive chef and general manager, Michael Goularte.

The popularity of downtown Turlock's newest restaurant is evident by the amount of money raised during the soft opening.

"The town's been really supportive and welcoming," said Goularte.

It's no surprise that Hauck's, owned by Tom and Karen Gallo, is supporting local sports teams as the bar and grill is adorned with sports memorabilia from local high schools and colleges. Twelve televisions also allow patrons to view their favorite professional sports teams in action.

On the menu, the casual dining restaurant features a number of barbecue items, including tri-tip and ribs, along with hamburgers, salads and French fries with a special Hauck's seasoning. Locally made brews and food from Sand Dude, Dust Bowl, Hilmar Cheese and Foster Farms are also featured.

Hauck's offers a self-serve area in the front of the restaurant and sit down service in the rear, next to the bar. The restaurant is located at  142 W. Main St. and is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
