New home for Jessica's House
Jessica's House groundbreaking
Building Committee Chair Mark Kirkes guides viewers through a virtual tour during the groundbreaking of Jessica's House new campus.

On Tuesday, Jessica’s House celebrated the “virtual” groundbreaking of its new, 15,600 square-foot facility via ZOOM conference, where Building Committee Chair Mark Kirkes guided approximately 100 viewers through a tour of the property at 4105 Crowell Rd. in Turlock. The Jessica’s House for Healing Hearts capital campaign meant to raise funds for the organization’s new home launched in January with just $800,000 raised toward its $6 million goal, but now has amassed $2,474,250 thanks to 80 generous donors. Combined with a $3 million match from EMC Health, Inc., the campaign is now at $4,949,500.

“I am inspired by this community, by the kindness and generosity that has even continued through this pandemic,” said Nancy Daley, chair of the For Healing Hearts capital campaign.

According to Executive Director Erin Nelson, Jessica’s House will take occupancy of its new location in spring 2021.

Remembering a ‘fierce defender of freedom’
Memorial Day 1
During a Memorial Day ceremony held on Monday at Turlock Memorial Park, Marsha Gonsalves, with the support of her husband Larry, shares memories of their son, Sgt. 1st Class Chad Gonsalves, who died on Feb. 13, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee north of Deh Rawod in central Afghanistan (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).
Every Memorial Day, locals put on their red, white and blue attire, maybe don a red poppy in remembrance of the fallen, and make their way to Turlock Memorial Park cemetery.
