At 8:49 a.m. Saturday, Jared Collins, 15, posted a new photo of him perched atop a motorcycle to his Facebook account. One hour later the Turlock teenager had sustained fatal injuries while out riding the bike with a friend.

The teenager, who the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified as Jared Ficarelli, but who also went by the last name of Collins, died from injuries he sustained when the off-road motorcycle he was driving collided with a pickup truck at F Street and South Rose Street.

The roundabout intersection has posted stop signs for traffic on F Street, but none on S. Rose.

The two teens were on the motorcycle traveling northbound on Rose Street. The pickup, driven by a 42-year-old man, was traveling eastbound on F Street, said Turlock Police Lt. Nino Amirfar.

The 42-year-old pickup driver had stopped at the stop sign and seeing that it was clear, proceeded into the intersection, according to the police report. The motorcycle collided with the pickup truck just as it was exiting the roundabout, Amirfar said.

The initial investigation into the collision indicated the motorcycle was being driven at a speed in excess of the posted 25 mph.

Collins was wearing a helmet but it was not secured properly, according to the police report. His 15-year-old passenger was not wearing a helmet and sustained major injuries from the crash, Amirfar said.

Both teens were rushed to area hospitals following the collision. Collins was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at Doctors Medical Center. The extent of the injuries suffered by the 15-year-old passenger is unknown.

The driver of the pickup was not injured and remained at the scene.
